Location and getting here
Where exactly is Huberhof in South Tyrol?
Huberhof is in Mühlbach (Riomolino in Italian), a village in the municipality of Gais in the Tauferer Ahrntal (Valli di Tures e Aurina) in South Tyrol, at about 1,500 m. The address is Mühlbach/Riomolino 23a, 39030 Gais (BZ). Please don't confuse this Mühlbach with Mühlbach (Rio di Pusteria) near Brixen (Bressanone) in the Eisacktal (Valle Isarco): Huberhof is in the small mountain village above Gais, about 15 to 20 minutes by car from Bruneck (Brunico). Our guide Getting here and location explains the best way to get here.
What is the road up to Huberhof like, especially in winter?
To reach Huberhof you drive up from the valley, because the farm is not on the valley floor but on the mountainside at about 1,500 m. Guests underestimate this more than anything else, so we'd like you to know before you come. The road up to Mühlbach goes either via Percha (Perca) or via Uttenheim (Villa Ottone). In winter the road is kept well cleared, but we still recommend winter equipment for your car, meaning winter tyres or snow chains on board.
How far is Huberhof from Kronplatz?
The drive from Huberhof in Mühlbach above Gais to the Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) valley station takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The Kronplatz and Speikboden (Monte Spico) ski areas are 15 to 25 minutes away. There is no ski bus directly from the farm, so for ski days your own car is the most practical option. There's more in our guide Winter farm stay near Kronplatz.
Can I get to Huberhof by bus?
Yes, the nearest bus stop is about 5 minutes from Huberhof, and a minibus stops there three times a day. With the guest card you receive on arrival, you can travel free of charge by bus and regional train throughout South Tyrol during your holiday, ski buses included; long-distance trains such as Intercity and Eurocity are not included. Because the minibus only runs three times a day and there is no ski bus from the farm, having a car here is very handy.
Is there a restaurant near Huberhof?
Yes, Gasthof Huber is only about 50 metres from Huberhof and also belongs to the Wolfsgruber family. It serves traditional food in a homely atmosphere, which is handy on the evening you arrive, for example. Please ask the Gasthof directly about opening times and closing days.

Huberhof is home to 35 cattle, 2 horses, 3 pigs, 3 cats, 5 hens, 4 rabbits and 1 dog; some of the animals spend about 120 days a year on the farm's own alpine pasture, the Huberalm. Helping with the farm work isn't part of a stay at Huberhof. Doris and Stephan are happy to show you round the farm by arrangement, though, and you are welcome to watch and ask as many questions as you like.
Can I buy farm produce at Huberhof?
Yes, at Huberhof you can buy milk, speck, Kaminwurzen (smoked sausages) and eggs from the farm. Speck and Kaminwurz are also available as whole pieces. When time allows, we also make Graukäse (grey cheese) and butter from the alpine milk. Just let us know what you'd like.
Is Huberhof a real working farm and a Red Rooster member?
Yes, Huberhof is a member of Red Rooster (Roter Hahn, in Italian Gallo Rosso) and is rated 3 flowers. It is a working grassland dairy farm, an Erbhof (inherited farm) first documented in the 14th century and in the same family for 13 generations. With solar panels and firewood from its own forest, the farm produces most of its own energy. There's more on the pages Our farm and Farm history.
Can I bring my dog or other pets to Huberhof, and is smoking allowed?
No, pets are not allowed at Huberhof, and there are no exceptions. Much as we love animals, please leave your dog, cat or other pets at home; we hope you understand. Smoking is only allowed outside, not in the apartments.
Things to do in summer and winter
Can you go hiking straight from Huberhof?
Yes, at Huberhof you set off right from the front door. For families we recommend the path through the Mühlbacher Talile to the farm's own Huberalm, about 1 hour 30 minutes with 400 metres of ascent; along the way you pass an educational trail, the reservoir with its Kneipp pool and the Mühlbacher Badl. For something longer, take a loop with a stop at the Huberalm, 2 to 4 hours depending on the route, with 700 metres of ascent. Every walk is described in our guide Hiking from the farm.
What is the Huberalm, and how far is it from Huberhof?
The Huberalm is the Wolfsgruber family's own alpine pasture at about 1,850 m, at the head of the Mühlbach valley (Valle di Riomolino) in the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park (Parco Naturale Vedrette di Ries-Aurina), about 4 km from Huberhof. On foot you reach it in about 50 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the route. In summer the Huberalm is open: you can stop for simple alpine dishes and fresh milk. In winter our guests are welcome to use the Huberalm as a place to rest. There's more on the page Our alpine pasture.
What is there to do in winter around Huberhof?
In winter you set off from Huberhof on snowshoes or on foot into the snowy Mühlbacher Talile, where a sledge run leads from the Huberalm down to the car park. There are floodlit sledge runs in Uttenheim and in Weißenbach in the Ahrntal (Riobianco, Valle Aurina), and cross-country trails in Antholz (Anterselva) and Rein in Taufers (Riva di Tures), about 30 minutes from the farm by car. Skiing at Kronplatz or Speikboden is a 15 to 25 minute drive away, and at 1,500 m the farm itself has reliable snow. All our tips are in the guide Winter farm stay near Kronplatz.
What can you do near Huberhof on a rainy day?
On a rainy day you can drive from Huberhof to Bruneck and its old town in about 15 to 20 minutes, or to Sand in Taufers (Campo Tures) in about 20 minutes, where you can see the interior of Taufers Castle (Castel Tures) on a guided tour. For swimming and sauna, head to Cron4 in Reischach (Riscone) near Bruneck. Museums in the area include the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa in Bruneck Castle, the South Tyrolean folklore museum (Südtiroler Landesmuseum für Volkskunde) in Dietenheim (Teodone), which is largely open air, and LUMEN, the museum of mountain photography on Kronplatz. It's best to check opening times in advance.
