Winter farm stay near Kronplatz: skiing, sledging and cross-country skiing
From Huberhof in Mühlbach (Riomolino) above Gais it is 15 to 25 minutes by car to the Kronplatz (Plan de Corones) and Speikboden (Monte Spico) ski areas. There is no ski bus from the farm, but snowshoe hikes start right at the front door, and in the Mühlbacher Talile you can sledge from the Huberalm down to the car park. What makes winter with us special is the reliable snow at about 1,500 m.

How far is Huberhof from Kronplatz?
From Huberhof the drive to the Kronplatz valley station takes about 15 to 20 minutes. For the two nearby ski areas, Kronplatz and Speikboden, allow 15 to 25 minutes.
If you drive via Percha (Perca), the nearest access to Kronplatz is right at Percha railway station, where the Ried gondola takes you up into the ski area. The Speikboden ski area is in the Ahrntal (Valle Aurina) and is part of Skiworld Ahrntal.
Alta Badia, Klausberg and the Sellaronda ski circuit are also nearby. So in a week's holiday you can get to know several areas and still come back to the quiet of Mühlbach in the evening.
Is there a ski bus from Huberhof?
No, there is no ski bus directly from Huberhof. We'd rather be upfront about it: for ski days your own car is the most practical option. The nearest bus stop is about 5 minutes from the farm, and a minibus stops there three times a day.
With the guest card you receive on arrival, you can travel free of charge by bus and regional train throughout South Tyrol during your holiday, ski buses included. Long-distance trains such as Intercity and Eurocity are not included. For a trip to Bruneck (Brunico) or a day off skiing, it is a useful addition to the car.
Each apartment has its own garage space with internal stairs, so you only carry skis and bags a short way into the house. After a day on the slopes, skis and boots go into the ski room with its boot dryer, and by the next morning your boots are dry again.
Where can you go sledging near Huberhof?
There's a sledge run right in our own valley: from the head of the valley at the Huberalm, a run leads down through the Mühlbacher Talile to the car park. Children especially love whizzing down it on a sledge. The sledge runs in the area at a glance:
- Mühlbacher Talile: from the Huberalm down to the car park
- Oberwielenbach (Vila di Sopra): sledge run to the Lercheralm near Percha, about 20 minutes by car
- Uttenheim (Villa Ottone): floodlit sledge run at Gasthof Bauhof
- Weißenbach in the Ahrntal (Riobianco): floodlit Tristenbach sledge run
On the floodlit runs in Uttenheim and Weißenbach you can also go sledging in the evening. Huts along the runs have their own opening times, so it's best to check them in advance.
Where can you go cross-country skiing and snowshoeing?
You can go snowshoeing straight from Huberhof. Explore the snowy Mühlbacher Talile on foot, on snowshoes or on touring skis. In winter our guests are welcome to use the Huberalm as a place to rest. The hut only serves food and drink in summer, so in winter it's best to pack your own tea and snacks.
For cross-country skiing, head to Antholz (Anterselva) around the Südtirol Arena by Lake Antholz, or to the cross-country centre in Rein in Taufers (Riva di Tures), each about 30 minutes by car from the farm. If you fancy something different, there are also places for ice skating and ice climbing nearby.
How do you get up to the farm safely in winter?
Huberhof is on the mountainside at about 1,500 m, and the road up to Mühlbach goes via Percha or Uttenheim. It is kept well cleared. We still recommend winter equipment for your car, meaning winter tyres or snow chains on board, and a little more time for the drive up after fresh snow.
Being on the mountain has a big advantage in winter: at 1,500 m the farm is noticeably higher than the villages in the valley, and the snow up here is reliable. There's more about the drive in our guide Getting here and location.
What can you do on days off from skiing?
On Kronplatz you'll find LUMEN, the museum of mountain photography, and in Bruneck Castle the Messner Mountain Museum Ripa. For swimming and sauna, head to Cron4 in Reischach (Riscone) near Bruneck. In Sand in Taufers (Campo Tures), about 20 minutes from the farm, you can see the interior of Taufers Castle (Castel Tures) on a guided tour. It's best to check opening times in advance.
And after a long day in the snow, Gasthof Huber, which also belongs to the Wolfsgruber family, is only about 50 metres from the farm.
